In July of 2002, the women of the village of Ugborodo in Nigeria took over the neighboring Chevron/Texaco oil terminal demanding electricity, roads, schools, hospitals and a more equitable distribution of the wealth from the oil extracted from their country by the multi-national corporation. The weapon they used to gain access to the terminal was the threat to disrobe which is a huge insult in their culture. I wrote this song based on a story I read in the New York Times. Included are links to stories about the takeover.
